Wake Up Call

Do you ever feel like some things were meant just for you?  I saw some great quotes a fellow FB Friend posted that struck a chord:
"There should be in the heart of every man and woman, the cry, 'I am going to live. There is nothing given to me but time in which to live, and I am going to endeavor each day of my life to do some labor which will be acceptable in the sight of my Heavenly Father, and if possible, do a little better today than I did yesterday.'"
~Heber J. Grant
Wow!  I have forgotten about this amazing purpose to life: To live each day to please God.  That was a wake up call for me.  For a very long time now, I've been living each day quite selfishly.  And then it happened AGAIN, not too much later...another quote that was exactly what I needed to hear!

"Finish every day & be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders & absurdities no doubt have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well & serenely & with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense. This day is all that is good & fair. It is too dear, with its hopes & invitations, to waste a moment on yesterdays."
~ Ralph W. Emerson

I hate making mistakes and I have a tendency to dwell on it rather than just LettiGo! Coincidence that a fellow friend posted these on Facebook?   Maybe...maybe not ☺Either way, I am grateful.

My List

I made a list of things I've never done and would like to do.
I tried to make a list of 30 things since I was turning 30... but now it's just a list of things I STILL need to do ☺

Here is what I actually accomplished:

1.  Go Horseback Riding (summer 2010)
2.  White Water Rafting (summer 2010)
3.  Canoeing (summer 2010)
4.  Snowshoeing (winter 2010)
5.  Learn how to Snowboard (winter 2010)
6.  Go to Disney World (fall 2010)
7. Run in a 5K (Neon Splash Dash, fall 2012)
8. Find the perfect meadow running dress...and then find a meadow... ;) (summer 2011)
9. Take a road trip to somewhere I've never been (Jerome, AZ; summer 2011)

This is what I have left:

19. Record a CD
20. Ride on a passenger train
21. Go to a white sandy beach
22. Sleigh ride
23. Get my passport

The rest of this list is for the bigger things, since they are more expensive and time consuming:

24. The South (visit or live in)
25. See a Broadway Musical ON Broadway
26. LDS Church History Tour
27. Cherry Blossom Festival
28. Hike in Hawaii
29. Washington DC's Monuments

Now I have FINALLY come up with 30 things. I reserve the right to add to it or change it in any way!

Wish me luck ☺

To: The New York Times, From: Another Single Female Mormon

A couple days ago, the New York Times published an interesting article about a "Mormon Woman's Choices".  Ms. Hardy shares with her readers about the challenges she faced when she was a practicing Mormon living a Single life. I was sad to read that she felt pitied, judged and left out of Mormon Society.  Life is short, and it's terrible she's lived her life feeling that way...so my heart goes out to her and in some ways, I do get it.

But I don't think it's a completely accurate view of life in the LDS church...at least not my life (and many other Single Mormons).  I do not feel pitied, judged or left out.  Over the last 2 years I attended a single's ward where our ages ranged from 17-37 and I was right in the middle of it all.  I felt like I belonged.  During that time, I also had the privilege to get to know other LDS members in the familly wards from children to the elderly. I taught early morning seminary, invited the old and the young to participate in all the musical programs I put on, and planned side by side with other adults as we put together a bona fide Passover meal in the community and stake.  Both the YSA and family wards made me feel very valued and important. And if I don't fit into a community?  Well that's the beauty of single life...I am free to move somewhere else!

Ms. Hardy wrote that her dating pool of mormon men was quite small and "The leftovers were left over: closeted gay men, porn-addicted virgins, along with the merely awkward, uncompromising and unlucky"  What?  Times have CHANGED.  I see more and more amazing and attractive LDS singles that choose, for various reasons of their own (of which are not the reasons stated above) to marry in their late 20s or 30s-unlike what once was the Standard Mormon Marriage Cliche.  Am I that old Cliche Single Female Mormon? No!!☺I actually think that I am attractive, talented, intelligent, not socially awkward, emotionally stable...and really quite lucky.  Practically perfect in every way. Ok fine. I'm not Mary Poppins (as awesome as that would be)...but some parts of me are pretty spectacular!

I read the article's comments, many of which displayed bitterness towards the pressure to be perfect in the Mormon Culture.  The imperfect Culture is different from Doctorine and therefore ought to be separated. But I know that can be hard sometimes. However, I have never felt pressure to be perfect or depression as I am taught the truths of the Gospel...those negative feelings are not any part of what I have come to feel of the Spirit.  Rather it is Inspiring and Uplifting.

I've had many conversations with guys outside of my faith that have asked me if I ever wonder that I'm wasting my life away in my commitment to follow the LDS lifestyle.  I've considered it...and I can somewhat relate to Ms. Hardy's words.  But rather than being "trapped in adolescence", it still amazes me how how much I continue to grow and mature, even from a few months ago! It seems this lifestyle is more liberating rather than restricting. I have come to realize that the Gospel of Jesus Christ and all that goes with it is a true source of life for me.  It is what makes me the most happy ☺ I know these teachings come from a God who loves us and wants us to be happy and successful in our lives.

Of course my voice can't be heard as well as in the New York Times, but hey...I've now passed the 1,000 mark of pageviews for my blog!  So some people are reading it.  Quite the small number compared to the Times...but still, I just wanted to share a different perspective from another female single mormon. Thanks!

Moldy

You know that certain Mormon "Mold" that members seem to fit into?  I think I first noticed it after I moved back here to the West after being on the East Coast for quite some time.  I came back seeing all of these members of my church wearing exactly the same style of clothes, same hair style, and even talking with the same inflections in their voice and saying the same kinds of phrases.  I'll be honest, it kind of creeped me out!☺ Who came up with this Cookie Cutter Mold anyway, and why have we conformed to it?  I may get a little laugh from friends when I say so-and-so seems kind of "Moldy" and it's not meant to be rude at all...it's just my words and the way I observe people.  It is interesting to me that there are all kinds of different groups in society that have their own Prototype.  But underneath all of our different Cultural Molds, there are many unique individuals worth getting to know a little deeper. I still wonder though, why are we all Moldy?

Trailer Bash!

I read a blog post about a Trailer Trash Bash that my friend put on after she and her husband moved into a Trailer Park...and it got me thinking about EAC days when I lived in one too! It is fun to see people's reaction when I tell them I lived in a Trailer Park and I have to explain that was THE place to live! They just don't get it ☺
I can't remember having White Trash Parties. BUT let me share my non-white-trash-bash Memories:

~Trailer Hopping! Going around to all the trailers in Howard's Trailer Park and getting to know all of our new friends/neighbors

~Sunday afternoon Potlucks

~Game Nights at Noelle, Jamie, Lanell and Angela's Trailer (Movie and Sign Game were my favorites and WOW...all I can say is can't play these games in the same way with other people)

~Turning on our car radios and having Dance Parties in the parking lot

~The Couch on the Front Porch of Shauna and Melanie's Trailer and EVERYONE coming over to hang out on it

~Filling up Tyson, Josh (maybe?) and Joel's truck beds with water and
watching What Lies Beneath.

~Meeting in the Trailer Park for our crazy Midnight runs to Krispy Kreme
(all the crazy way to MESA!)

~Hanging Cinco de Mayo Lanterns on the Pine Trees outside for a party

~Secret midnight drawings on friend's sidewalks with sidewalk chalk.

~Ransoming people's stuff (one time it was a Trailer's Front Steps) and other crazy pranks.

~Playing in the Rain.

~ Monday Morning Breakfasts at Amy, Orinda and Leslie's Trailer on those holidays we got off school

Ok...I have to admit that some of those DID sound a little White Trashy! I loved those times and all my Trailer Park Peeps! Thanks for the memories guys!
